What is a Talisman ?
A talisman is defined as…an object held to act as a charm to avert evil and bring good fortune or something producing apparently magical or miraculous effects… Also described as charms or amulets.
I use the word talisman to describe the tangible or intangible symbols for an experience, a touchstone for a time in your life-however long or short. A talisman is both useful and magical…and very human.
Think of a photo you keep in your wallet, a stone you carry in your pocket, a pendant you wear from a loved one. A lucky mug, a worn tshirt from a favorite concert, your reading chair. A wedding ring…
A travelig trio carried with them a tiny lego figure, found at the beginning of a two weeklong impactful journey. That lego figure now embodies all the memories from that trip. Treasured. Not to be lost.
Consider writing about your talismans. Identify them and note what they mean to you.
What is a talisman story?
A talisman story acknowledges that most stories - mine, yours, theirs, fiction, non-fiction- hold a talisman as a part of the experience.
Think about your experiences, and the stories you tell about them. What meaning do they have in your life? Do you have stories of happiness, sadness, accomplishments, grief? Funny stories? Notice if a talisman is present, an object of some kind? Part of the story…
Or a thought you carried with you? An intangible talisman? A guiding phrase or word? Like persist, or take your time, or this will pass…
We tell our stories, and some us write about them. We read stories. Figure out what talsimans are embedded, maybe unnoticed, in the stories.
It’s fun! And definitely meaningful. It helps us understand ourselves, and those around us. Near and far…
