Talk About It
Talking, from the time we are born… Body language, gestures, and the sounds coming out of our mouths, it’s all a kind of talk. It’s all communication. So many ways to express ourselves, to get across who we are, what we want, what we are thinking and feeling.
Lately I’ve been working on what this “Express Yourself” is all about. Working on all aspects of the brand, how my message and purpose is coming across.
I have been having fun, and being thoughtful, about the Express Yourself logo. What image can communicate what it’s all about, instantly?
Just coming out of an arts immersion as an art gallery curator, and working with artists of all kinds, and especially visual artists, my first ideas for a logo centred around images of paint brushes and splashes, which are colourful and attention getting. What a great way to self express! Art! Visual art! However I am not a painter myself and a lot of my focus and purpose has to do with getting each of us to discover our own form of creativity. So what is mine?
I do not want “Express Yourself” to look like it is for visual artists especially, or to suggest that painting is the best/only self expressive of creativity for all of us. In my opinion, the benefits of exploring the world of painting to self express are worth it, to do, to try. Maybe for everyone, at some point, whoever you are. A study, a course, an afternoon immersed in the complex or simple act of painting could be life changing. Or relaxing. Or challenging, frustrating (which can be revealing).
I do want this website and its EY social media to expand the ideas of how we can express ourselves, and why it is good. Essential. Crucial. And I want my own self expression to get across that message. So, painting is not it. What is my way? Images, yes. And definitely talking. Using words to self express and get across the ideas I feel, and know, are worth it. To encouage you, to persuade you, any of you, to self express. In your own way.
So, communication through words, through listening, talking, reading, writing are at my core. All the related forms of expression…metaphors, images, structures and free form, movement, music, organizing. our pets, hairstyles, vehicles, activities, the food we eat, the friends we choose. Our loves… All of these, when I think of them, show up in my mind as language-sounds, words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs. Stories.
When I ran across the image of the comment bubble, it felt right. For me. Talk. And choosing the messy pencil crayon bubble, right too.
With Express Yourself. It’s what I want to say.
